The further you press foam, the harder it pushes back. Your bones press deepest, so they take the most pressure back. Which also makes them the two spots carrying the most load — and the parts carrying the most load are the parts that fail first.
That's what the patches are. Cells crushed shut and packed tight. Crushed foam isn't softer, it's denser — and denser foam is firmer foam. There's also less of it left underneath you.

Foam fails in a specific way. It's a cellular material, and under repeated load the cell walls crush and stay crushed — that's the body-shaped divot you're describing, and it's why the cushion you paid for ends up a flat pad with a hole in it.
This isn't foam. It's a solid, flexible grid with no cells to crush. It deflects under you and comes back.

Don't judge it in the first thirty seconds. Spreading pressure doesn't announce itself — most people notice it afterwards, in not needing an hour to recover once they've arrived.

Probably because the columns never buckled.
A gel grid only works if the cell walls fold out of the way under a bony point. Whether they do comes down to two things almost no listing mentions: how thick the walls are, and how soft the gel is. Walls that are too thick just sit there being firm — which is exactly why so many honeycomb cushions feel hard. Stiff gel does the same thing.

It's under two inches, and less once you're sitting on it. Most drivers don't change their seat setting at all — but check your mirror the first day.
If you already drive with the seat at its lowest setting to reach the pedals, or you're tall enough that headroom is tight, think about that before you order.
